The menu at Dar Bruttone is full of classic specialties from the Lazio region, but with a fresh and innovative flair that keeps the locals entertained. Even a familiar antipasto, such as Bruschetta, is a thing of beauty. Other popular appetizers include trippa (Tripe), or Burrata con pomodori secchi e alici (fresh italian cheese with dried tomatoes and anchovies).
Pasta alla Gricia is a very old recipe that is considered to be the precursor to Pasta alla Amatriciana. Dar Bruttone's version includes the traditional guanciale (pork jowl), and pecorino, and also includes carmelized Tropea onions.
Their version of Pasta alla Carbonara with truffles is particularly popular amongst locals and visitors alike.
For a secondo, try Saltimbocca, which is veal rolled with sage and prosciutto and cooked in white wine and butter.
Dar Bruttone is truly an authentic local spot in the heart of San Giovanni. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced, but the great atmosphere is what will get you to come back again and again. Their cheerful owner Claudio will always make sure you are smiling as well !
Open Tuesday-Sunday for lunch and dinner (12:00-2:30pm and 8:00pm-Midnight). It's only a short walk from the Re di Roma Metro Station (located on Line A) located at 18 Via Taranto. Another great way to see the San Giovanni is by tram! The TramTracks party begins every Monday at Porta Maggiore. See our website for details.
